Getting ready for a tattoo is simple, but a little prep goes a long way. Make sure you eat a solid meal before you come in — nobody sits well on an empty stomach. Stay hydrated, get some rest the night before, and skip the alcohol or anything that’ll thin your blood.

Keep the bandage on as long as your artist tells you, then wash it gently with mild soap and lukewarm water. Pat it dry, don’t rub, and use a thin layer of fragrance-free lotion to keep it from drying out. For the next couple of weeks, avoid scratching, soaking, or sitting in the sun.
